The word Catahoula regained its existence from the word ‘Choctaw’ that means “Sacred Lake” as they were originated in northern Louisiana near Catahoula Lake. They also known as Catahoula Curs, Catahoula leopard curs, Catahoula hounds, or Lousiana Catahoula. Their official name was changed to Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog after it was declared as the state dog of Louisiana in 1979. Many theories are reflecting the origin of Catahoula.
